Love him or hate Kanye West knows how to make fun of himself. The self procaimed greatest performer on earth is funny in this spoof skit of BET’s 106 & Park. While his on stage performance totally sucked his performance in this video was dead on. Kanye West added himself to the roster of music’s most infamous on-stage mishaps Saturday when he failed to nail his performance of “Love Lockdown” on “Saturday Night Live.”
To be fair, West’s greatest strengths lie in rapping and producing.
“Love Lockdown” and the album from which it hails, “808’s and Heartbreak,” is West’s first foray into singing. But whether by fault of his own or because of his audio equipment, his attempt to serenade “SNL’s” audience came off as feeble at best, fueling rumors that he requires a little help in the vocals department.
Ashlee Simpson, Britney Spears, Madonna and Milli Vanilli to greater and lesser degrees, they’ve all been accused of the same thing.

From the moment West got on the mic at “SNL,” it was clear something wasn’t right. Rob Levine, executive editor of Billboard magazine, speculated West’s weak voice had to do with a glitch in the autotune feature many artists use to stay on pitch while recording in the studio and rocking out live.
“Autotune allows you to hit every note perfectly. You’re not going to be sharp or flat,” Levine said. “I think the effect wasn’t fully realized, [the autotune] might have been set up wrong. But it’s foolish to suggest he was lip-syncing. If he were lip-syncing, it would’ve sounded exactly the way he wanted it to.”
But even if West didn’t lip-sync, Tyler Gray, Blender magazine’s senior editor, isn’t letting him off the hook.
“He was cheating. At the end of the day, did he make up for that lackluster element of his performance with something that balanced it out? I don’t really think so. It was neat visuals, but the music wasn’t quite up to par,” said Gray.
“In the beginning, he got an A for effort because he was trying to break the mold,” Gray said, referring to West’s branching out from typical hip-hop techniques. “But the effort grade only goes so far. Now he actually has to sound good. And he didn’t. He sounded like a bad talent show.”

Oh my goodness. I couldn’t hold in laughing by the end of that clip. There is no way that is lip singing though. I am a singer and the breaths he takes and in and out of his voice was not recorded. It just sounded really bad. And the background vocals did not go well at all.
This sh*t was so funny. Kanye can’t sing without the electronics being set up just right, go figure !
Sounds like an American Idol audition lol. Gotta give it up to this culture that allows these pop “singers” so much prestige and money.

I’ve been really haunted by it since seeing this video on SNL; don’t know if it was the song, the new sound (which was very indigenous-sounding), the panoramic background with its pulsing colors, the energy he poured out in the dance or the way I projected my own feelings of failure and humiliation when it started out soooo shaky and out of tune, but I just had to see it again…
BYW, I give the guy kudos for finishing the song…
Autotune. What an interesting effect. What people don’t seem to understand is that Autotune is a vocal effect that in my opinion should only be used in the studio. It is almost impossible to bounce around stage and capture the essence of the effect as compared to the studio vocal. Like many have already said, I give him credit for keeping it moving to the end……..but, if he is such a genius in the hip hop world, why didn’t he realize that he could possibly butcher his own song?

It’s way too late to matter now, but he looks confused in the beginning because the live audience was booing him and he wasn’t sure what to do. The show’s production people were telling him in his earpiece to keep singing and they edited out the booing. Go watch the unedited video. If you think THIS one is funny, you’ll love seeing how it really happened!
Thank you for running that snl Kanye West video. I am a 50 year old mom that has never heard his music until SNL and now I am obsessed with that video!! Just a big thanks because I couldn’t find it anywhere else. ( My kids think I’ve gone nuts)

Say what you will about his vocals in the verse, but overall that performance is off the chain. When it comes on TV the mix is better so the music overpowers his vocals a little bit more, but that big screen and the breakdown in the chorus is straight up awesome. I actually like the chorus better on the SNL version than the studio. Too subdued on the studio version.
I’m not a big Kanye fan and don’t know much about his music, but I was actually blown away by the SNL performance when I saw it live. He can’t sing the best, but dude is a straight up performer and artist.
I do Technical theater for a living and i do lights as well as some sound and i don’t really think that the snl performance was not all that bad, I thought that was all effects really because i have done effects like that in some of the shows or concerts i did. And come on look it up a lot of singers now days do use the auto tune and I mean a lot. I also don’t think that he lip sings he is to legit for that and plus the videos of the audience “booing” are probably edited like that. i know that an eight year old boy could do stuff like that with a recording program called audacity trust me its not hard.
